Sports Leaders Training

Sports Leaders Training (Yr 2-6)

As part of your membership package, you can host a FREE Sports Leaders day in your setting.

Who is the Sports Leaders course for?

Sports Leaders courses are for up to 20 Year 2, Year 5 or Year 6 (or a mix of Y5 and Y6) students who would like to develop their leadership and communication skills.

You don’t have to be an athlete or a sports fan to take part in the course.

The course will teach you essential life skills that can be used in high school, further education and later in life.

What does a Sports Leaders course teach you?

Sports Leaders courses teach you essential skills and behaviour needed to lead others.

The course also outlines how these new skills can be used in a variety of situations outside of sports and physical activity, including at home, with friends and in your future.

Upon completion, you’ll better understand the roles and responsibilities of a leader and start developing your own leadership style.

How will the day work?

Suzy Brooks will deliver the days training session for you.

We will discuss how you’d like this to work in your setting before I attend your school.
The training consists of a morning session where pupils learn about the theory of how-to lead activities.
We cover communication skills, safety and learning about the S.T.E.P principle.
In the afternoon leaders complete Active Crew Challenge 1, this culminates in the Sports Leaders delivering their planned session to a group of younger children (Rec to Y3)from the school.
The delivery part of the day gives the Sports Leaders a chance to put all that they’ve worked on into practice.
The Sports Leaders begin to realise how challenging it can sometimes be to deliver a session.
How do you feel?
At the end of the session during the feedback pupils are asked to say one word that sums up how they feel after completing the training.
Some of the answers that get repeated many times are: “proud”, happy” and “exhausted”!.
Next Steps?

The next step is for schools to get their Active Crew together and complete the further challenges set.

Your group of trained leaders can assist you in school with:

  • Leading lunch time activities for younger children
  • Assist at Sports Day and House Sports Events
  • Help keep the schools P.E equipment tidy and safe
  • Update any P.E and Sport Notice Boards
  • Help deliver Sports celebration assemblies

Overall, they can be great role models for the younger children in your school community.

Also, Norwich School Sport Partnership would like to call on your Active Crew to help us deliver and lead some of the partnership wide events.

If you would like to book a Sports Leaders Course for your students, please email Suzy Brooks on S.Brooks@canorwich.org to discuss dates and timings of your day.
