West Earlham Junior Named Sports School 2010

From champions who span the generations to people who have dedicated a lifetime to sport, all were honoured at the Norwich City Council 2010 Sports Awards.

Following a talk by guest speaker, Tim Newenham, advisor to the Olympic Park Legacy Company, each of the 11 winners received their special award in the council chamber from the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Councillor Tom Dylan.

The sports school of the year award (sponsored by Norwich School Sport Partnership) was given to a school that has made a huge improvement to its PE provision over the last year and has worked extremely hard to raise the profile of sport by having a dedicated PE display board and a regular PE ‘star of the month’.

The school now has over half of its children attending out of school clubs, with a choice between football, basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, trampolining, rugby, dance and cricket.

The school had not taken part in any competitive sport for several years up until September 2009. However, this academic year the school has:

  • won the Norwich Schools Girls Football tournament
  • won the Norwich Schools Sports hall Athletics tournament
  • won the Norwich Schools Girls Cricket tournament
  • and represented Norwich School Sport Partnership at a gymnastics competition at Easton College

The school has also made good links with local community sports clubs, as well as City Academy Norwich to support children attending more out of school clubs. Parents are having a positive reaction with several beginning to volunteer.

The award for Sports school of the year 2010 went to West Earlham Junior School.

 Jon Osborne, Partnership Development Manager for Norwich School Sport Partnership said;

"It is great to see all of the hard work that the school have put in this year be recegnised by the City Council. Norwich School Sport Partnership are proud to sponsor this award and we feel that it has been given to a school that fully deserves it."
