"The seven values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games were brought to life when hundreds of youngsters showcased their dance skills yesterday.

More than 300 Norwich children took part in the Norwich School Sport Partnership’s dance show Get Set for 2012.

Held at the Open youth venue in Bank Plain, the event was the culmination of months of hard work by the young people and staff from 10 different schools.

All of the routines were based on the Olympic and Paralympic values of friendship, respect, excellence, determination, courage, equality and inspiration.

Jon Osborne, development manager of the Norwich School Sport Partnership (SSP), said: “Schools have used their own imaginations to come up with an exciting dance and with the Olympics being massively topical, it’s been a way of using dance and exercise to explore the values of the Games and how young people can use them in everyday life and school life.”

Schools have worked on the project since October, working with the partnership’s dance coordinators Lisa McGreevy and Emily Harper.

The schools involved were City of Norwich School (CNS), Recreation Road Infant, Cavell Primary, St John’s Catholic Infant School, City Academy, Avenue Junior, Hethersett High School, St Thomas More Catholic Junior School, West Earlham Junior School and the Hewett School. There were two performances on the day, one at 4pm and another at 7pm, starring youngsters aged from five to 16.

Katie Carroll, PE teacher from CNS, said: “The pupils have been really excited and enthused by it. It’s really emphasised the values of the Olympic Games and the pupils have gained a lot from it.”

The Norwich SSP has been organising dance shows for the past five years. Yesterday’s event was the first of two being organised by the partnership for this year. A second event will be held with the remaining partnership schools in May."
